How to induce labor?

The most effective and safest way is to see your doctor.  Medical techniques and also medicines can bring on labor more quickly. The other one option is to try to induce labor on your own. Before you try anything, you should talk to your doctor or care giver. You should make sure the method you are attempting is safe, and that your pregnancy is at the optimal time to induce. There are a few foods have been touted to bring on contractions. There is one type of fruity tea in particular is a popular labor inducer.

Some of the medical problems to induce

gestational diabetes

growth problems in your baby

too little amniotic fluid around the baby

high blood pressure

preeclampsia

a uterine infection

placental separation from the uterus

Rh incompatibility

Your medical person may need to induce labor if your amniotic sac (water) is breaks, but you haven’t started getting contractions.
Contractions are a sign that labor has started, and then your cervix has begun to open. lack of contractions could mean that your body isn’t preparing for delivery like it should. Then you might prefer to induce if you live far from a hospital, or you have a history of delivering quickly. 8ts said that inducing labor may also be medically necessary after 42 weeks. After 42 weeks, the placenta can no longer provide enough oxygen and nutrients for your baby. High blood pressure or preeclampsia is one of the big reason for inducing labor. If you have high blood pressure during your pregnancy, delivering your baby early could prevent dangerous complications.

Medicine for induce labor

There is 2 types of medications for induce labor. The drugs called prostaglandins soften, or “ripen” the cervix to ready it for delivery. Patients can take these drugs by mouth, or they can be inserted as a suppository into your vagina. There is another type of drug, which  kick-starts contractions.
There is medicine called Pitocin, it is the most common medication. You get it through an IV. Your cervix needs to be ready for labor or the medicines won’t work.

Labor induction methods

It us true that medicine isn’t the only way to get your labor started. There are two others options also , they are Membrane stripping and breaking your water . Those may be done at your doctor’s office.  Membranes stripping involves the amniotic sac. Your doctor uses their fingers to push the amniotic sac away from your cervix.

For breaking your water, the doctor pops open the amniotic sac with a small plastic hook. Then your baby will move its way to the top of your cervix in preparation for delivery. Even you could go into labor on that days, or even hours later. In those types of methods, membrane stripping is generally considered more safe. But on the other hand experts disagree on whether this practice is worth doing.

Natural ways to induce labor or inducing labor naturally

You can try inducing labor on your own, without medical intervention. But medical studies haven’t verified that these methods work or not, so check with your doctor before you try any of them.

First,
One of the safest and also easiest ways for women to induce labor on their own is to take a walk. In these method the gravity from your movements may help slide your baby down into position. But it's true that, a walk may not speed your delivery date, it’s good for you in general.

Secondly,

You can have sex, if you feel up to it. Study says that, semen contains hormones called prostaglandins, which make your uterus muscles contract. On the other hand having an orgasm yourself will also stimulate your uterus too.

Thirdly

Acupuncture may work as well as membrane stripping, and it could save you a doctor’s office visit. So you can try acupuncture also.

Exercises to induce labor

In medical studies,, there’s no evidence that getting more active will put you into active labor, but it’s good for your health and pregnancy.

Exercise can reduces your risk of a gestational diabetes and C-section delivery. All though it’s safe for most women to exercise during their pregnancy time. Though it’s a good idea to check with your doctor before lacing up your sneakers.  Some certain medical conditions may mean you should avoid exercise completely during pregnancy.

Pineapple to induce labor

There is an enzyme called bromelain that breaks down proteins, pineapple has that enzyme. That enzyme makes it a key ingredient in many meat tenderizers. The main theory behind using bromelain enzyme for labor induction is that it might break down tissue in your cervix. Then your cervix naturally softens and ripens to prepare for delivery. But there is no scientific evidence and no medical studies that this theory is true, however. Bromelain is not very active in the human body. And pineapple could worsen pregnancy heartburn.

Acupressure to induce labor

Acupressure treatment stimulates certain points along your body’s energy pathway like acupuncture, But the difference between two treatments lies in the application.  Acupressure stimulates these points using massage-like pressure, instead of using needles, Many pressure points around the body are thought to trigger the labor. One practitioner sits just above your ankle on the back of your shinbone. Another one is in the center of your palm. If you wants to perform acupressure on yourself, press down on one of these points for a few seconds. Then, massage the area. It's said that acupressure might also make your labor less uncomfortable.

inducing labor at 39 weeks

It is usually best to let nature take its course, inducing labor may be a good idea if there’s a problem with your pregnancy or your baby. If you and your baby both are healthy, an induction might help you avoid a C-section.
A study in 2018 found that the women in their first pregnancy who were induced at 39 weeks, were less likely to need a C-section delivery than those who waited for normal. Complication rates did not differ between the two groups.

Ask your gyno for induce if:

this is your first pregnancy

you’re only carrying one baby

you and your baby are healthy

C-sections delivery can be risky, as it causing complications like bleeding and infection. But on the other hand C- section  may be necessary in certain cases, these surgical deliveries can also cause more problems with future pregnancies.

Labor induction process

Your Labor induction process will be held on a hospital or birthing center. The whole process will differ based on which technique your doctor uses to induce labor.
Some doctors sometimes use a combination of methods. It's all depending on the techniques your doctor tries,. Labour can take time to start, from a few hours to several days. Most of the time and most of the cases induction will lead to a vaginal delivery. If induction doesn’t work for you, you might need to try again or have a C-section.

What does labor induction feel like?

The question what labor induction feels like depends on how your doctor induces your labor. Membrane stripping is slightly uncomfortable for you. You can expect some cramping afterward also. You may feel a slight tug when the doctor breaks your amniotic sac. After that there will be a rush of warm fluid. Using medicine to induce labor produces stronger and faster contractions. You will more likely to need an epidural when you’re induced than if you start labor without induction.

What to expect during labor induction

It's depends on the method of induction, what you can expect :

Drugs Prostaglandins come as a suppository that goes into your vagina. After a few hours, the medicine should trigger your labor.

You may get Pitocin through an IV. This pitocin a chemical, stimulates contractions and helps to speed up your labor process.

Your doctor will place a plastic hook inside your vagina to open up the sac, during amniotic sac rupture, You can feel a warm rush of water as the amniotic sac breaks. When your water is breaks, your body’s prostaglandin production increases, which should start your contractions.

The medical staff will monitor your contractions to see how your labor is progressing. Your baby’s heartbeat is also monitored.

Labor induction risks factor

Main two reason of labor induction is health concerns and a long pregnancy. These are the reasons why you might consider labor induction. On the other hand inducing labor can have some serious risks factor.

The Risks include:

premature birth

slowed heart rate in the baby

uterine rupture

infections in both mother and baby

excessive bleeding in the mother

umbilical cord issues

lung problems in the baby

stronger contractions

vision and hearing problems in the baby

poor lung and brain development

You have to remember that ,Labor inductions don’t always work. If your induction process is not successful, you may need to have a C-section delivery.

Labor induction side effects

The techniques and the drugs are used to induce labor can cause side effects in both you and your unborn baby. Pitocin and other medicines that ripen your cervix can intensify your contractions, they making contractions come faster and closer together. It's more painful for you when the contractions are more intense. It can also affect your baby’s heart rate. Your gyno might stop giving you the drug if your contractions are coming too quickly. It's true that rupturing the amniotic sac may cause the umbilical cord to slip out of your vagina before your baby. This is called prolapse.

If your pressure is high, then pressure on the cord can reduce your baby’s oxygen and nutrient supply. The Labor needs to start within the time of about 6 to 12 hours after rupturing your amniotic sac. If you not going into labor within that time frame increases the risk of infection to both you and your baby.

Bishop score for induction

The name Bishop score is a system, which your doctor uses to figure out how soon you’ll deliver, and whether to induce labor. Bishop score, gets its name from obstetrician called Edward Bishop, who discovered the method in 1964. Your gynecologist will calculate your score from the results of a physical exam and ultrasound. The score is based on factors like:

how far your cervix has opened

how thin your cervix is

how soft your cervix is

where in the birth canal your baby’s head is (fetal station)

If you have a score of 8 or above means you’re close to starting labor, and induction should work well. Your odds of a successful induction process go down with a lower score.

Induction vs. labor that isn’t induced

Induction process uses medical techniques or medicine to start your labor. Now on the other hand survivability e the“Natural labor " ,happens on its own time. The length of a natural labor that happens without medical intervention varies. Some of the pregnant women deliver within a few hours of their first contractions. But the others may have to wait several days before they’re ready to deliver.

When you go into labor naturally, at first the muscles of your uterus start to contract. Your cervix dilates, softens, and thins (effaces) to prepare for your baby’s delivery. During your active labor, your cramps become stronger and come more often.  Then your cervix widens from 6 cm to 10 cm to accommodate your baby’s head. At last at the end of this stage, your baby is born.

Benefits of waiting

If you or your baby’s health is at risk, waiting for natural labor to come on its own is the best decision. The biggest benefit of waiting for natural labor is that it reduces the risk of complications from induced labor. Labor induced without a good reason before 39 weeks can lead to more complications than benefits. But some medical reason if your doctor doctor induces your labor, it could improve both your and your baby's health health and the health. You should have to consult with your doctor all the benefits versus the risks, before you decide to have an induction. If your gynecologist is pressuring you because of scheduling issues, then you should get a second opinion.
